In Honduras there exists a chain of islands known as Cayos Cochinos. Recognized as a one of the key sections of the Meso-American Reef to preserve by the Smithsonian Institute, TNC, WWF, and World Bank, commercial fishing has been banned and it has become a marine sanctuary. However, the Garifuna people have lived virtually the same way since the late 1700s, are allowed to remain within the sanctuary, using traditional fishing methods to survive.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore Sea Turtles - Running Wild Media Exclusive by Alex Goetz

The Running Wild Media crew met up with the National Park Service in Cape Hatteras National Seashore to film a sea turtle nest excavation. Sea turtle numbers in the past had dwindled, but they have recently seen an increase, possibly due to efforts to preserve the population in the past.

Special thanks to Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the rangers there for allowing us to film, Ryan "Gac Attack" Gargac for some sweet camera work, and BGSU for providing us with the funding through the Givens Memorial Fellowship grant to put together these videos!
